RPHRM Website Comes Alive!

In late 2004 a strategic decision was taken by Curtin Business School to provide the journal Research and Practice in Human Resource Management (RPHRM) online. Editors Dr Alan Nankervis and Dr Cecil Pearson requested Dr Peter Hosie of Curtin Business School to coordinate the scoping, design and building of the website. An heroic effort to track down all back issues was undertaken to allow every article to appear online.

The main aim in developing the website was to make it as accessible as possible for prospective users to locate and download RPHRM journal articles. An ancillary aim was to dramatically increase the reach of the journal to prospective users in the HRM community. As such, this is an ‘open access site’ – no logins are required and users are encouraged to make use of the material in the site however they wish. All pages are set up so they will print ‘as is’ rather than having to use a separate print function or to download a pdf file to print. Many journal sites were reviewed to ensure the most contemporary functionality and aesthetic qualities were incorporated into the layout.
All past issues of RPHRM are fully indexed by title, author, keywords and complete content to permit xhtml or pdf files of all past articles to be downloaded. All citations and abstracts of past articles are coded in xhtml which dramatically reduces download time (to less than a second on broadband) and enables web referencing in search engines. This greatly improves the chances of potential users of the journal locating articles of interest. All articles are indexed by Google and other prominent search engines to ensure high visibility and increased likelihood of attracting users. Beyond traditional keyword indexing, all words and phrases in every article are indexed by the search engines to give the site the best chance of attracting people who are searching for content within the published articles. This means RPHRM authors are likely to have a rapid and widespread uptake on their ideas to a world audience.
Remote Support was chosen to design and develop this website, and convert journal issues to xhtml and pdf format. This website meets the Web Accessibility Initiative Guidelines for access by persons with a disability. The content is strict xhtml, and every page has been validated against the World Wide Web Consortium’s XHTML definition. Extensive use of Cascading Style Sheets (also fully validated) makes the site function seamlessly across a wide variety of operating systems and browsers. Technically, the site meets and exceeds all relevant CBS, SHRI, Australian, Singaporian, and World standards.
